Let’s peel back the layers of what makes our annual Yamhill Carlton Down to Earth Spring Tasting so popular with wine lovers who come from as far away as Seattle and California, not to mention our own Portland metro backyard, to this event every year. Our eighth one is coming up on Saturday, April 29th from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Anne Amie Vineyards on Mineral Springs Road between the towns of Carlton and Lafayette. Buy your tickets now, because it always hits its cap of 550 tickets well in advance of the event, and this year’s ticket sales are ahead of the number that we sold at this time last March. Here’s the link for advance tickets.
Getting back to why it’s so special, it is one thing to say that Ken Wright Cellars will make its usual rare, off-site appearance to pour three of their exquisite wines (each of the three dozen wineries in attendance is limited to three pours for this event). It’s quite another to say that Ken Wright himself, who has become one of the most lauded winemakers in Oregon, if not the world, will also be there to pour and talk about his wines. And then it’s kind of off the charts to consider that Ken may well be the guy who personally delivers your wine purchases to your car – at our marketing meeting last week he volunteered to oversee the delivery duties in a process that we’re streamlining for this year’s event to make it easier to buy, gather and take home your favorite wines.
That kind of personal service and interaction with our stellar winemakers and growers is one of the reasons that this event has become legendary among lovers of our Yamhill-Carlton AVA wines, and why people come back year after year to taste, talk and purchase our latest vintages. Held inside the spacious production facility at Anne Amie to take capricious spring weather out of the picture, the event has ample parking both at the winery and in downtown Carlton, where a shuttle service will ferry festival-goers to and from Anne Amie.
As in previous years, wineries large and small that source fruit from our AVA will be on hand to pour and talk wine, from Penner-Ash Cellars and Soter Vineyards to Carlton Hill Vineyard, Roots Wine Company and JL Kiff wines. Many winemakers, including Ken Wright and Chris Berg of Roots, will be there to talk shop and present their wines. Susan Crum from the Tanager Vineyard will once again have her trained falcons on display, and food will be offered from the usual luminaries of our local restaurant and catering scene.
Besides exquisite and world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, look for wineries to pull out some of their special bottlings of varietals like Melon de Bourgogne, Dolcetto, Riesling and Gamay Noir, among others. And once again, one lucky attendee will take home six-plus cases of wine for the price of a raffle ticket that benefits our Yamhill Carlton Viticulture Internship Program at Yamhill-Carlton High School. Last year’s winner filled his car up with 76 bottles – an instant wine cellar to enjoy.
Maybe it will be you this year? Maybe Ken Wright will help you get those cases into your trunk? We hope to see you there on April 29th to celebrate spring with us.
