Yamhill-Carlton AVA Vineyards
The coarse-grained, ancient marine sediments native to the Yamhill-Carlton AVA are among the oldest soils in the Willamette Valley. These soils drain quickly, making them ideal for viticulture. Thus, the vines stop growing shoots and leaves earlier here than elsewhere, leading to more complete ripening, even in cooler growing seasons. This allows Pinot Noir to develop deep ruby colors and broad, silky tannins.
The mouth-filling wines exude powerful fruit aromas of raspberry, blackberry and black cherries, framed by minerality reminiscent of pipe tobacco, espresso, clove and dark chocolate and accented by scents of rose, violet, lavender and sweet wood smoke. These are alluring, complex, supple gems of Pinot Noir to sip and savor.

Doe Ridge Vineyard
Address: 9605 NE Fox Farm Road, Dundee, OR 97115
Owner: Bill Foley
Website: thefourgraces.com
Year First Planted: 2003
Acres: 40
Description: Of the 40 plus acres planted, 20 are farmed using sustainable agriculture with a focus on non-invasive viticulture practices with the other 20 acres farmed using the Rudolph Steiner practice of Biodynamics under the guidance of French consultant, Philippe Armenier. Each section of the vineyard integrates the swells and slopes with row directions that are slightly off of the typical north to south alignment. This is to allow for the full ripening of grapes and the avoidance of sun damage. In preparing the site it was ripped to a depth of five feet. The usage of untreated cedar post and metal stakes allow for the enhanced microbiological activity of the soil and result in better expression of the sedimentary Willakenzie soil. The newer Dijon clones of 114, 115, 667 and 777 and the old world Pommard clones are grafted to divigorating rootstocks, 101-14 and Riparia Gloire, and are planted at 2555 vines per acre (1.8m x 1.0m spacing). A wooded ravine and stream runs through the center of the site, ending in a beautiful pond which is available to irrigate the vineyard.

Eleven acres of pinot noir vines, including nine different clonal varieties, are draped along the hillsides, including the southwestern aspect of the eastern ridge with its mix of rocky volcanic soils, around the southern-facing top of the amphitheater, and along the southeastern aspect of the larger western hillside with sedimentary soil. The planted vineyard elevation climbs from around 350 to 525 feet above sea level. The vines are personally managed and tended by owners Tim and Anna Czuk, sometimes their three children, and always Oliver, Australian labradoodle and official vineyard guardian and protector. Sisu is a Finnish term that lacks a direct English translation but connotes ardent tenacity and resilience, representative of the Finnish spirit. Not only paying homage to Anna’s Finnish farming ancestry, but sisu also speaks to the character necessary for farmers and their vines alike when committed to growing world class Pinot noir.
