The Yamhill-Carlton AVA is the focus of a new feature article highlighting the wines and winemaking in our region.

Decanter recently published, Yamhill-Carlton: An Oasis of Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley. Standout wineries included: Elk Cove Vineyards, Résonance, Lemelson, Gran Moraine, and more!

The Yamhill-Carlton AVA is honored to be featured in Decanter’s latest article, highlighting our region as a premier destination for world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The article highlights what makes Yamhill-Carlton truly special: our unique terroir. The marine sedimentary soils, particularly the renowned Willakenzie series, give our wines their distinct character, while many other regions in the Willamette Valley have red Jory soil. Combined with an ideal elevation range of 200 to 500 feet and the protective influence of the Coastal Range, our vineyards benefit from a microclimate that nurtures complex, age-worthy wines. The protection from the Coastal Range makes our region warmer than other nested AVAs. These conditions impart dark fruit flavors, balanced structure, and the spice notes that define Yamhill-Carlton Pinot Noir.

Decanter’s US Editor Clive Pursehouse also highlighted some of our historic and most renown producers, including detailing the history of Elk Cove, the first vineyard to be planted in the region, and highlighting wines from Ken Wright Cellars, Penner-Ash, Gran Moraine, and more.

Beyond exceptional wines, the article recognized our region’s commitment to sustainability. Many of our vineyards proudly uphold certifications such as LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) and Oregon Tilth Organic, showcasing our dedication to thoughtful farming practices that respect the land and ensure quality for generations to come.

We invite you to explore the magic of Yamhill-Carlton for yourself. Start planning your trip today with one of our planned itineraries, or look at the many places to stay!
